A novel approach makes higher order wavelets really efficient for radiosity

چکیده
Since wavelets were introduced in the radiosity algorithm5, surprisingly little research has been devoted to higher order wavelets and their use in radiosity algorithms. A previous study13 has shown that wavelet radiosity, and especially higher order wavelet radiosity was not bringing significant improvements over hierarchical radiosity and was having a very important extra memory cost, thus prohibiting any effective computation. In this paper, we present a new implementation of wavelets in the radiosity algorithm, that is substantially different from previous implementations in several key areas (refinement oracle, link storage, resolution algorithm). We show that, with this implementation, higher order wavelets are actually bringing an improvement over standard hierarchical radiosity and lower order wavelets.

Smart Links and Efficient Reconstruction for Wavelet Radiosity
Wavelet radiosity is the uniication of two important methods to solve the radiosity equation: hierarchical radiosity and Galerkin radiosity. Although wavelet radiosity can reap the beneets of both methods, there is still a lot of overhead and in practice several problems occur. For example, using Haar wavelets the traditional push-pull scheme leads to obviously wrong results near common patch b...
متن کاملCombining Higher-Order Wavelets and Discontinuity meshing: A Compact Representation for Radiosity
The radiosity method is used for global illumination simulation in diffuse scenes, or as an intermediate step in other methods. Radiosity computations using Higher-Order wavelets achieve a compact representation of the illumination on many parts of the scene, but are more expensive near discontinuities, such as shadow boundaries. Other methods use a mesh, based on the set of discontinuities of ...
متن کاملSpace-Time Hierarchical Radiosity with Clustering and Higher-Order Wavelets
We address in this paper the issue of computing diffuse global illumination solutions for animation sequences. The principal difficulties lie in the computational complexity of global illumination, emphasized by the movement of objects and the large number of frames to compute, as well as the potential for creating temporal discontinuities in the illumination, a particularly noticeable artifact...
متن کاملThe Computation of Higher-Order Radiosity Approximations with a Stochastic Jacobi Iterative Method
The computation of higher-order polynomial radiosity approximations on a fixed element mesh, results in more smooth images than with a traditional piecewise constant radiosity approximation. Unfortunately, the number of form factors to be stored in a deterministic approach is considerably higher than with a constant approximation and the computation itself of the form factors is more difficult....
متن کاملInteractive Walkthroughs and Higher Order Global Illumination
The subtle lighting effects, which can be simulated by global illumination, are important to make virtual worlds look realistic. Higher order global illumination methods, like Wavelet Radiosity, have proven to be very efficient, but do not directly lead to solutions that can be used by the hardware used to display walkthroughs. In this paper, we discuss methods to efficiently map these higher o...
